Niue is a Pacific Island paradise like no other, one of the smallest countries with one of the largest raised atolls on earth. The currency is New Zealand dollars and English is almost universally spoken. It’s a friendly country where it’s normal for complete strangers to wave at each other, where nature hasn’t been broken and things are “the way they used to be”.

This 8-day tour highlights the best of Niue’s scenery and culture. You can choose to busy yourself with day trips, or simply sit by one of the resort pools and relax.

Itinerary  |  24-31 July 2020
  • DAY 1. Arrive Niue

Just 3.5 hours from Auckland is the beautiful Pacific Island of Niue – far from the madding crowds, no queues, no traffic lights and a leisurely pace of life. On arrival, we’re greeted by our friendly guide who transfers us to the beautiful Matavai resort – our home for the next 7 nights. The resort and your room offer a fantastic vantage point to view humpback whales, spinner dolphins, turtles & magnificent sunsets. Tonight, we enjoy happy hour around the pool, an introduction to Matavai, the chefs “taste of Niue” BBQ followed by a children’s cultural performance.

    Dinner

  • DAY 2. Eastern Coastline Tour

This morning we embark on a tour to explore the iconic sites and rugged terrain of Niue’s eastern coastline. We go from the village of Viea through to the Tuhia sea track. The tour includes a visit to an abandoned village, the Togo Chasm, Hikulagi Sculpture Park and a locally guided tour of Liahagi School. Back at the hotel, we enjoy happy hour by one of the pools or at the swim-up bar before an a la carte dinner and music by the Hopotoa Brothers.

    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • DAY 3. Relaxing Sunday

Sunday is a day of rest and worship on Niue. You may like to attend a church service, experience the beautiful singing and meet some of the locals. The shops and cafes are closed today with the exception of Wash Away Café at Avatere Beach – a visit here is an absolute must; the service is DIY – write your order down, grab yourself a drink, then write in the honesty book and take a seat. With its views across the coral beach and a delicious burger and cold beer in hand, it’s the best way to spend a lazy day. Transport to Avatere Beach is provided from the hotel.

    Dinner is at the resort.

    Breakfast, Dinner

  • DAY 4. 4WD Plantation Tour

Today we discover the true Niuean way of life as we take a 4WD plantation tour with Tony. This is a fun and easy-going adventure where Tony explains traditional farming methods and we see how Niuean’s grow their staple crops of taro, cassava, kumara, watermelon, pawpaw and banana. One of the many highlights of this trip is seeing and catching Uga (coconut crab) in their natural habitat.

Dinner tonight will be at a local restaurant.

    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • DAY 5. Leisure Day

Today is a day of leisure  and optional tours are offered. Dinner is at the resort.

    Breakfast, Dinner

  • DAY 6. Niue's West Coast

After breakfast we head out to explore Niue’s west coast. This 4-hour tour will provide an insight into Niue’s history and culture while we visit iconic sites and scenic locations. We travel from the village of Avatele up to the village of Hikutaueke. Included are light refreshments and a snorkel/swim in crystal clear waters.

Dinner tonight is at a local restaurant.

    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • DAY 7. Day of Leisure

Today, enjoy a day of leisure at the resort or choose from one of the optional tours. For our farewell dinner tonight, we’ll be treated to a traditional island spit roast and BBQ.

    Breakfast, Lunch, DInner

  • DAY 8. Homeward Bound

All good things must come to an end as we farewell our “family” at Matavai Resort and this beautiful friendly island paradise before returning back to Auckland.

    Breakfast

This is definitely not your typical Pacific Island experience. Rather than classic tropical scenes of long white sand beaches watched over by swaying coconut palms, its secret treasures hide at the end of paths and steps, not even remotely visible from the main road. Nicknamed "The Rock", it's a large upraised coral atoll with a two-terrace structure. The lower terrace is 28m above sea level and the upper, 69. This means swimming happens in secret spots — chasms, underwater caves (complete with stalactites) and secluded coral sand coves that could easily be used as a movie set.

      Gem of a find...

I'm fortunate to have made a few visits to the island and been to Washaway Cafe a couple of times. Just love the idea that it is a honesty bar - in a world so greedy and jaded, this place is refreshing. Just love it. Food is simple fare, but local and good. Always a great bunch of people - you will never know who you will meet. Such an awesome spot for a Sunday afternoon.
