Our first stop is the Community Arts Village, where we receive an introduction to the island’s creative community. We then visit the Milk, Honey & Grain Museum to discover stories of Great Barrier Island’s early settlers and learn how generations of island residents adapted to life in this remote environment.
Next, we take a leisurely stroll along beautiful Medlands Beach before visiting Aotea Brewing to sample locally brewed beer. We enjoy lunch from the onsite food truck, with an opportunity to purchase a hot drink from the neighbouring coffee roastery.
This afternoon, we settle into Sunset Waterfront Lodge, our home for the next four nights. Surrounded by park-like grounds beside Mulberry Grove Beach, the lodge provides a wonderfully peaceful base from which to explore the island.

Wednesday 2 December. With spring in the air, today is all about appreciating the hospitality of the locals. Navigating through Man O’War Passage, we enjoy a scrumptious onboard lunch while anchored in the sheltered waters of Port Fitzroy Harbour.
After lunch, we disembark for a visit to Glenfern Sanctuary, where we learn about its conservation work protecting native birds such as the kaka parrot, wood pigeon, and banded rail. A walk to Sunset Rock rewards us with breathtaking panoramic views over Port Fitzroy Harbour and beyond.

Friday 4 December. Today, we continue our island exploration. First, we visit passionate bee farmer Jacque, who gives us a guided tour of his property and shares his deep knowledge of bees and the natural environment. We also get to sample some of his mānuka honey.
Following this, our local driver takes us on a relaxed tiki-tour of the island. This includes a short bush walk into the stunning Nīkau Palm Grove to see the island’s robust and vibrant Nīkau palms. For the more active among us, there’s the option to continue on the track to the Kaitoke Hot Springs.
Those who prefer a more relaxed pace can continue the tiki-tour to explore the Okupu Harbour area, including ancient pōhutukawa trees and the ‘forgotten wharf’ at Blind Bay, with its charming stone bridges and deep streams.
We then return to the lodge for a relaxing afternoon, perhaps enjoying the antics of the busy kaka birds nearby.

FAQs
Every tour is a little different, and we understand you'll have questions before deciding if this holiday is right for you. We've answered some of the most common ones below. If you'd prefer to chat, we're only a phone call away and would be delighted to help.
Is Great Barrier Island suitable for seniors?
Absolutely. This tour has been designed specifically for mature travellers who enjoy comfortable travel, authentic experiences and a relaxed pace. At Seemore Tours, we design our holidays to be as active or as sedentary as you choose. While there are opportunities to enjoy short guided walks and nature experiences, these are generally not long or strenuous. If you'd prefer to sit back, admire the scenery, enjoy a quiet coffee or lose yourself in a good book, you're more than welcome to do so while others explore.
To ensure everyone enjoys the tour safely, guests should be able to walk approximately 300 metres unassisted and manage a few steps. Walking sticks and hiking poles are most welcome and are often used by our guests. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate walkers or mobility frames on our standard tours, as many of the locations we visit include uneven terrain, steps and boarding coaches, trains and boats where these mobility aids cannot be used safely.
If you're unsure whether this tour is suitable for you, we'd be delighted to have a chat and help you decide.
How much walking is involved?
This tour includes a mixture of short walks, guided nature walks and sightseeing stops. At Seemore Tours, we design our holidays to be as active or as sedentary as you choose. The walks are generally not long or strenuous, and if you would prefer to sit one out, you are welcome to relax nearby, enjoy the scenery, have a quiet coffee or read a book while others explore.
There are some short walks throughout the Great Barrier Island tour, including at Glenfern Sanctuary and the Nikau Palm Grove.
The longer Kaitoke Hot Springs walk is approximately 1.5 hours return and is completely optional. Those who don't wish to do the walk can continue exploring the island with our local driver before returning to the lodge.

What is included in the Great Barrier Island tour?
The tour includes return flights from Auckland, four nights' accommodation, all on-island transport and transfers, all breakfasts, lunches and dinners, and the included tours and experiences throughout the itinerary.
We'll also take care of the organisation along the way, so you can simply enjoy island life.
How do we get to Great Barrier Island?
We fly from Auckland to Great Barrier Island, with return flights included in your tour.
The flight takes approximately 20 minutes, making the journey itself a wonderful introduction to the island and its spectacular location in the Hauraki Gulf.
Once we arrive, our local driver and host will be waiting to welcome us, and all on-island transport, transfers and touring are taken care of.
What is the accommodation like on Great Barrier Island?
We'll spend all four nights at Sunset Waterfront Lodge in Tryphena, set amongst park-like grounds beside beautiful Mulberry Grove Beach.
Great Barrier Island is wonderfully different from mainland New Zealand. Life here is simpler and much of the island operates off-grid using solar, wind or generator-powered electricity.
That's all part of the experience. It's about slowing down, enjoying the surroundings and experiencing the wonderfully unspoilt character of Great Barrier Island.
What makes Great Barrier Island so special?
Aotea Great Barrier Island feels wonderfully removed from everyday life.
It's an off-grid island of dramatic coastline, native bush, quiet beaches and beautiful night skies, where life moves at a slower pace.
Over five days, we'll experience the island through the people who call it home - meeting local producers, learning about conservation, exploring by land and sea and discovering places you may never find travelling independently.
It's a chance to experience a very different side of New Zealand.
Can Seemore Tours arrange transport from my home?
Yes. We offer a convenient home pick-up and drop-off service for many locations (conditions apply). Simply ask us when booking and we'll discuss the options available from your area.
What size are your tour groups?
We specialise in small-group escorted holidays, with most tours welcoming between 8 and 16 guests. Travelling in a smaller group creates a relaxed, friendly atmosphere where everyone quickly gets to know one another, and many lifelong friendships begin along the way.
Smaller groups also give us the flexibility to visit unique locations, meet local hosts in their homes and businesses, and enjoy authentic experiences that simply aren't possible with large coach tours. It means less time waiting, more time exploring, and a far more personal holiday from beginning to end.
What will we see at Glenfern Sanctuary?
At Glenfern Sanctuary, we'll learn about the conservation work being undertaken to protect Great Barrier Island's native environment.
The sanctuary is home to birdlife including kākā, kererū and banded rail, and we'll hear more about the sanctuary during an informative presentation.
We'll also visit Sunset Rock, where we're rewarded with panoramic views across Port Fitzroy Harbour and beyond.
Can I visit the Kaitoke Hot Springs?
Yes — for those feeling active, there's the option to continue through to the Kaitoke Hot Springs.
The walk is approximately 1.5 hours return. It's an optional experience, so there's no pressure to participate.
Those who prefer not to walk can continue exploring with our local driver before returning to the lodge for a relaxing afternoon.
What will we experience on the coastal cruise?
Our coastal cruise is one of the wonderful ways we'll experience Great Barrier from a completely different perspective.
We'll travel along the island's west coast and through the spectacular Broken Isles, learning about historic kauri sawmill and whaling station sites along the way.
After passing through Man O' War Passage, we'll enjoy lunch onboard in the sheltered waters of beautiful Port Fitzroy Harbour.
Is there free time during the tour?
Yes. We've deliberately allowed some time to simply enjoy being on Great Barrier Island.
On Day 4, after visiting local producer O'Kiwi Passion, the afternoon is yours to enjoy the lodge and its surroundings — perhaps take a swim or simply relax by the water.
If there's somewhere in particular you'd like to visit, you can also speak with your Tour Manager about what may be possible.
Can I go fishing while we're on Great Barrier Island?
Yes. There is an optional fishing excursion available during the tour for those who would like to get out on the water.
This is an additional experience and isn't included in the standard tour price. The supplied itinerary lists the additional cost as $200 per person.
Are meals included?
Yes. Your tour includes daily breakfasts, all dinners and lunches! There are plenty of picnics and local restaurants.
If you have any dietary concerns, then let us know when you book and we'll ensure you are well catered for.
Can I travel on my own?
Absolutely. Around half of our guests travel solo, making Seemore Tours a wonderful way to meet like-minded people. We keep our single supplement as affordable as possible, and many lasting friendships begin on our tours.
If you'd prefer to share a room, just let us know when you book. We'll happily check whether there is another solo traveller of the same gender who is also interested in sharing accommodation. While we can't guarantee a suitable roommate will always be available, we'll certainly do our best to match you with a compatible travelling companion.
