Taranaki bursts into Spring with the Taranaki Garden Festival. This festival showcases some of New Zealand’s most stunning private and public gardens and inspiring events. It’s a fusion of some of the greater pleasures of life: gardens, art, food and events combined to make up a delectable serving of enjoyment for everyone. 


As you would expect on this lovely long weekend away, we spend three full days viewing some of the best gardens in the country, right around Mt Taranaki.

Itinerary  |  28 October – 1 November 2023

  • DAY 1. New Plymouth

    Some arrive by coach and some arrive by plane and wherever it is that you have come from, we finally all meet in the bar at the Devon Hotel in the early evening. We enjoy three nights at this central hotel while we spend the following few days exploring the gardens.

  • DAY 2. Taranaki Garden Festival

    We depart the motel early and start exploring the gardens of Taranaki. We visit several gardens in and around New Plymouth including Sanderson Garden, Gravetye, Tairoa Lodge and more.

  • DAY 3. Taranaki Garden Festival

    We leave the hotel bright and early for another full day of garden visits including Pukekura Park, Tupare, Pukeiti, Hurworth Country Garden and The Yews

  • DAY 4. We'll be coming round the mountain...

    After checking out of the Devon Hotel, we travel right around the mountain, visiting a variety of country and town gardens. Tonight we spend our final night in Stratford and enjoy dinner in town.

  • DAY 5. Homeward bound

    It’s homeward bound today and for those who are travelling by coach we depart Stratford to Taumarunui via the Forgotten Highway. We stop for morning tea at the Whangamomona Hotel where we learn the fascinating history of the “Republic of Whangamomona”. Afterwards, we continue our journey back home.
