Itinerary   |   28 Oct - 2 Nov 2026
  • DAY 1. Woodchester Station | Hanmer Springs

Wednesday 28 October. Our adventure begins as we arrive in Christchurch and travel north to Hanmer Springs. En route, we visit Woodchester Station, a property significantly impacted by the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake. The station captured national attention when a massive cliff face thrust dramatically from the earth, creating the now-iconic Wall of Waiau.

After our visit, we continue to Hanmer Springs and settle into our centrally located 5-star accommodation. Just a short stroll from the Thermal Pools, shops, cafés, and restaurants, it provides the perfect base for the next five nights.

  • DAY 2. Molesworth Station

Thursday 29 October. We begin the day with an unforgettable 4WD guided journey through the spectacular landscapes of Molesworth Station. Spanning 486,000 acres — an area comparable to Stewart Island — Molesworth showcases some of New Zealand’s most rugged and awe-inspiring high-country scenery.

As we explore this vast terrain, our expert guide will share fascinating insights into the station’s history, the realities of farming in such a remote environment, and the resilience required to manage New Zealand’s largest working station. It’s a remarkable journey through history and landscape, offering rare access to this extraordinary region.

    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

  • DAY 3. Hurunui Gardens

Friday 30 October. Today we immerse ourselves in the beauty of the Hurunui Garden Festival, discovering some of North Canterbury’s finest private gardens. We visit two Gardens of National Significance — the 5-star Coldstream Garden and the 6-star Flaxmere Garden — each an exceptional showcase of vision, creativity, and natural splendour.

We also visit historic St Helens Station & Homestead, where the owners warmly welcome us and share their inspiring stories of dedication and perseverance in developing and maintaining these outstanding properties. It’s a day rich in elegance, heritage, and breathtaking surroundings.

    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

  • DAY 4. Fete Festival

Saturday 31 October. Today is yours to relax and enjoy the Hanmer Springs Fête, held within the beautiful historic Queen Mary Hospital grounds. As North Canterbury’s premier shopping event, the fête offers a lively and festive atmosphere — ideal for discovering unique Christmas gifts.

Wander beneath towering trees, enjoy the vibrant music, and browse an impressive array of boutique stalls. With so many tempting treasures on offer, you’re sure to find something special to take home.

If time permits, perhaps unwind with a soak in the famous hot springs — the perfect way to conclude a magical day.

    Breakfast, Dinner.

  • DAY 5. Rainbow Station

Sunday 1 November. Today we embark on Part Two of our high-country adventure as we journey into the dramatic landscapes of Rainbow Station. This remote alpine paradise features rugged mountain passes, sweeping tussock plains, and crystal-clear river valleys framed by towering peaks.

As we traverse this untamed wilderness, we’ll encounter cascading waterfalls, striking gorges, and historic farm buildings, each telling the story of the generations who have shaped this remarkable land. It promises a day of exploration, spectacular scenery, and a true connection to New Zealand’s vast high-country beauty.

    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

  • DAY 6. Homebush Stables | Homeward Bound

Monday 2 November. This morning we farewell Hanmer Springs and begin our journey back to Christchurch for our flights home. Along the way, we stop at Homebush Stables, once part of a 33,000-acre estate owned by the pioneering Deans family — among the first to farm the Canterbury Plains.

Here, we enjoy a delightful lunch and time to explore the historic buildings, museum, and beautifully maintained grounds. It is a fitting final stop, offering insight into Canterbury’s rich pastoral heritage before we say goodbye to this memorable adventure.

    Breakfast, Lunch.

Acheron Accommodation House, Molesworth Station

A number of cob houses were built along the route to house stock drovers: The Acheron Accommodation House, also known as the Clarence Accommodation House, is the only one left today. It was built in 1863 by Ned James, a ships carpenter and station hand known for also building cob buildings. He took nearly a year to build the eight-roomed house. The house grew into a social hub. It included a store and unofficial post office and became a venue for a number of local clubs and meetings. Once its proprietor, Ernie Tozier, died in 1932, the house became used less often and was abandoned in 1954. It has now been restored and, along with the Molesworth Cob Cottage (closed to the public), is registered with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
